INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
The premises where eases of infectious diseases
occur are promptly visited, and in some eases drains are
tested. The principals of the various schools where patients
or contacts attend are immediately notified. One hundred
and seventeen of these notices were sent in respect of one
hundred and sixty-two children. Detailed enquiries are
made after each of the principal infectious diseases with
the object of endeavouring to prevent an extension.
To ascertain quickly the origin of one or two cases
often prevents a small outbreak assuming larger proportions.
Routine swabbing of contacts in the case of
Diphtheria is generally adopted to discover" carriers."
In this I work in close co-operation with the Medical
Officer of Health.
The following number of rooms were disinfected
for the under-mentioned causes:—
Scarlet fever 77
Diphtheria 30

The Public Elementary Schools, with the exception of
the Maiden Parochial, which were being reconditioned at
the time, were sprayed throughout with formalin during
the summer holidays.
One hundred and seventy-six books from the Public
Library and Schools were disinfected for various
reasons.
There are no arrangements available in the area
for cleansing and disinfestation of verminous persons
and their belongings.
