River Thames-derived water from the Thames Valley
group of works. Well water from Merton Pumping
Station.
'No new sources of supply were instituted and there were
no changes to the general scheme of supply in the area.
'On account of their hardness content and alkaline reaction,
the Board's river and well water supplies are shown to be
not plumbo-solvent. It should, however, be appreciated that
all types of water pick up varying amounts of metal from the
material of water piping, particularly when it is newly installed.
This applies to copper, zinc, iron and also to lead.'
During 1972, samples of water were taken for bacteriological and
chemical examination by the Public Health Inspectors as follows:—
Bacteriological—
Swimming Baths 208
Other premises:—
Metropolitan Water Board 6
Sutton District Water Company 6
220
Unsatisfactory Results—
Swimming Baths 9
Chemical—
Swimming Baths 10
Other premises:—
Metropolitan Water Board 5
Sutton District Water Company 2
17
All 17 of these samples were satisfactory.
The swimming baths mentioned above include installations at
certain school premises, and these in the main were satisfactory.
The Council-owned swimming baths are closely controlled by
the Department concerned, and the co-operation of the Baths Manager
in taking action in respect of unsatisfactory samples is gratefully
acknowledged.
Sewerage and Sewage Disposal
I am advised that the arrangements for sewerage and sewage
disposal are adequate. There are a number of cesspools in the Borough
and arrangements to empty them at intervals are made by the respective
owners.
Registered Common Lodging Houses
There are no registered common lodging houses in the Borough.
