Poliomyelitis
At the end of the year, 93,309 persons had completed a full course
of immunisation since the scheme began in 1956. The age distribution
of these completed cases is given below:—

Smallpox
From 28th July, 1971, on the advice of the Department of Health
and Social Security, vaccination against smallpox was deleted from the
schedule of recommended routine procedures in early childhood.

There was an increase in the numbers of new cases of conditions
other than syphilis and gonorrhoea from 499 in 1970 to 829 in 1971.
