Food Poisoning. There were no outbreaks of food poisoning during
the year. There were in fact only three cases notified, the causative
organism in each case being Salmonella Newport. All were in adults, an
elderly man and two middle-aged women. Although unrelated in any
way both women were employed in schools, one as a kitchen assistant at
a school in Wimbledon and the other as a school meals helper at a school
in Morden.
Measles. Although 1962 was not properly an epidemic year for
measles, there were 258 cases. The disease generally was mild in character
and there were no deaths.
Whooping Cough. Only 16 cases of whooping cough were notified in
1962, as against 41 for the preceding year and 138 for the year 1960. It is
significant that in the years before whooping cough vaccination was practiced
it was common-place for the annual total to run into several hundreds.
Malaria. One case of malaria, believed to be contracted abroad, was
notified during the year. Patient was subsequently admitted to hospital
for treatment.
Pneumonia. There were 18 cases of pneumonia, of which three were
stated to be influenzal in origin. In 1961 there were 29 cases and in 1960 a
total of 36 notifications were received.
Puerperal Pyrexia. There were seven notifications of puerperal
pyrexia, all of which occurred in hospital, giving a rate of 7.9 per thousand
total births. Seven notifications were also received in the preceding year
from this hospital situate in the district, which has quite a large maternity
unit. All cases occurring at this hospital are allocated to our district,
regardless of whether the patient resides in this area or elsewhere.
CLEANSING STATION
Although the attendances at the Council's Cleansing Station continue
to remain at a low level a total of 16 attendances were made during the
year, as compared with six for the previous year, as follows:—
Number of cases of Scabies treated 8
Cases of Scabies with concurrent verminous head –
Cases of Scabies with secondary septic skin conditions

Number of cases of verminous heads only 4
Total number of attendances at the Centre 16
