Contaminated Foodstuffs. Seven complaints of food were received
relating to baby food and bread roll containing foreign objects, bacon,
bread, cake, and baby food of dubious quality, and a chicken with abnormal
bone condition. All were carefully investigated and, when appropriate,
action was taken—mostly by informal letter.
There are no producers of milk registered within the district. 116
inspections were made of milk distributors' premises in 1962 and at the
end of the year there were on the register four dairies and forty distributors
of milk. Three of the dairies were physically large distribution depots
handling only milk in bottles or sealed churns but the fourth is a large
pasteurising establishment processing some 60,000 gallons daily with a
weekly output of over 5,000,000 bottles.
Close supervision was kept over the dairy hygiene and repeated checks
were made of the temperature controls, flow rates, recording charts and
the results of bacteriological and chemical examinations. No separate
samples for bacteriological or chemical examination were made by your
officers during the year of the incoming milk from the producers.
183 samples of milk were submitted for bacteriological examination
during the year and two were unsatisfactory, failing the Methylene Blue
or keeping quality test. These were from two separate firms and were
dealt with informally, as they were isolated examples of normally satisfactory
milk.

The undermentioned licences to use special designations were granted during 1962:—

Pasteuriser's Licence1
Dealer's Licences:-
Pasteurised6
Tuberculin Tested6
Sterilised4

Details of the chemical analysis of milk samples will be found on
page 34.

otherwise.
