SECTION C—SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES
Disposal of the Dead. The Carshalton and Merton and Morden Joint
Burial Board formed by the two authorities administers 60 acres of land
in Lower Morden as a cemetery for both areas. During the year 385
interments took place there of which 207 were from Merton and Morden.
The North-East Surrey Crematorium Board, representing the
Councils of Battersea, Sutton and Cheam, Carshalton and Merton and
Morden, operates a crematorium sited in the Battersea cemetery grounds
at Lower Morden, which adjoins the burial ground referred to above.
Cremations there numbered 1,264 in 1962, of which 300 were from Merton
and Morden.
Drainage and Sewerage. No major improvement schemes have been
undertaken during the year but, in addition to the normal maintenance
work carried out on soil and surface water sewers, several lengths of
defective sewers have been relaid throughout the district. Arrangements
are in hand for work to be carried out on a surface water relief sewer in
the south-west corner of the district.
Food and Drugs. Sixty-three samples were submitted to the Public
Analyst during the year, all of which were found to be unadulterated and
genuine. Details of the samples will be found on pages 34. One
hundred and eighty-three samples of milk were sent to the Public Health
Laboratory for bacteriological examination. Two failed to conform to
the prescribed standards. Twenty-two samples of ice cream were also
sent to the Laboratory, further details of which will be found on page 35.
