Councils. One of the largest of the parks—Morden Park—has, up to the
present time, been preserved as a permanently open natural park, providing
our suburban residents with the same amenity enjoyed by rural
populations who have the countryside at their back doors.
There were 212 factories on the register at the end of the year, including
several large factories, e.g. the Tri-ang Group of toy factories
employing over 3,000 persons. There are, in fact, four factories employing
over 400 persons.
VITAL STATISTICS
Population
The Registrar-General's mid-year estimate of the home population
at 67,560 shows an estimated decrease of 60 on the previous year, although
the natural increase by excess of births over deaths was 70.
All rates used in this report are based on the Registrar-General's
figures.
Births
During the year the total number of registered live births for the area
was 868, giving a rate of 12.8 per thousand of the population, comparing
closely with the figure for the previous year of 12.06.
Stillbirths registered during the year numbered 11 (6 males and 5
females), being one less than in the previous year, giving a rate of 12.5 per
1,000 total births.
Illegitimate live births registered during the year numbered 52 (27
males and 25 females), compared with 32 in the preceding year. Of the
11 stillbirths registered none was illegitimate.
Deaths
Deaths registered during the year numbered 798 (437 males and 361
females), giving a rate of 11.8 per 1,000 population. This compares with
a total of 772 for 1961, giving a rate of 11.4 per 1.000 population.
