DIPHTHERIA IMMUNISATION
Eight hundred and five children in the district received
complete primary courses during the year. Of this total, 415
were carried out in the Welfare Centres, 306 by private practitioners
and 84 in the schools. In addition, 1,401 children were
given boosting injections at school (156 of these being children
who are not resident in the area).
Of the primary courses given at Welfare Centres, 395 were
combined Diphtheria/Pertussis, whilst private practitioners
gave 268 such courses.
There was a considerable increase in our figures this year,
which offset our low numbers for 1953. Fortunately we were
able to carry out a full programme of immunisation uninterrupted
by the stoppages due to poliomyelitis which were
necessitated in 1953.
Our usual propaganda campaign was continued during the
year by means of Press notices, distribution of leaflets at
Clinics, and bookmarks through the medium of the public
libraries.
