DIPHTHERIA IMMUNISATION
There were 719 children in the district who received a
complete primary course of injections during the year. Of
these, 370 were carried out in the Welfare Centres, 300 by
private practitioners, and 49 in the schools. In addition 1,746
children were given boosting injections at school (199 of these
being children not resident in the area).
Primary courses showed a decrease of 85 as compared with
last year, but this figure is of course governed by the number
of births in the previous year, and the drop was to be expected.
The usual propaganda campaign was carried on during the
year, stressing to parents the danger of diphtheria, and encouraging
them to have their children completely immunised
before attaining the age of one year.
WHOOPING COUGH IMMUNISATION
As from 1st August, 1952, the County Council gave its
official blessing to the inauguration of immunisation against
Whooping Cough. All general practitioners in the district
were circularised, and immunisation was started in the Welfare
Centres.
Details of 100 primary courses and 12 boosters given since
that date are set out below. Fifty-two of the primary courses
were given by private practitioners.
