SECTION C — SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES.
Food Advisory Committee. During the year the Committee,
which consists of members of the Council, representatives
of the trade, and various associations and organisations,
continued to apply its efforts in this important phase of Public
Health.
Propaganda is of course its main function, and the year was
started well with a slogan competition, for which 129 entries
were received. Sixteen prizes, thirteen of which were donated
by traders, were awarded to competitors. The winning slogan,
"Food Protection Prevents Infection " was exhibited in poster
form at several shops in the district through the kind cooperation
of local traders.
The poster display stand which was purchased last year
was again put to good use. It was displayed at six different
fetes and flower shows, at which literature was also distributed
to the public.
There was no exhibition or Clean Food Week held during
the year as the Committee decided on a policy of propaganda
spread throughout the year rather than a concentrated effort
during a short period.
Food and Drug's. One hundred and eighty samples were
submitted to the Public Analyst during the year, of which only
6 were reported to tie adulterated or not genuine—a satisfactory
result. Details of the items sampled and of action
taken regarding non=genuine samples will be found on pages
39 and 40. Once again we made good use of the facilities
offered .by the Public Health Laboratory Service. Seventy-two
samples of ice cream and eighty samples of milk were submitted
for bacteriological examination. All the milk samples
conformed to the prescribed standards, but results for ice
cream were not so satisfactory as those for the previous year.
Water Supply. The district is supplied by the Metropolitan
Water Board and by the Sutton District Water
Company, their respective distributive areas being
approximately the parishes of Merton and Morden.
The supply of the Metropolitan Water Board is only
sampled infrequently as a routine, otherwise samples are taken
when circumstances indicate the necessity for local investigation.
The Board supplies copies of their official minutes in which the
results of the examinations are recorded.
