PREMATURE BABIES.
There were 49 premature births notified during the year,
Three of these premature babies failed to survive one month.
Below is a summary of the notifications:—
(a) At home 4
(b) In hospital 45
The number of those born at home:—
(a) Who were nursed entirely at home 4
(b) Who died during the first 24 hours —
(c) Who survived at the end of one month 4
The number of those born in hospital:—
(a) Who died during the first 24 hours 1

ACCIDENTS AT HOME.
In the section on Causes of Death there will be found
reference to one death from an accident in the home. This
figure is a quite inadequate measure of the seriousness of this
problem. The number and frequency of disabling and disfiguring
accidents not fatal goes unrecorded in these statistics.
Every serious avoidable accident to a child which results
in .a permanent disability or disfigurement is a personal tragedy
in some home, often a lifelong handicap for the victim and perpetual
remorse for the parent. Most of these accidents arise
