REPORT OF THE CHIEF SANITARY INSPECTOR.
Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have pleasure in presenting the Annual Report which
summarises the work carried out by your Sanitary Inspectors
during the year ended 31st December, 1947.
Housing Inspections. As in former years, since the conclusion
of hostilities, the shortage of materials and labour available for
the maintenance of existing houses made it impossible to proceed
to any appreciable extent under the provisions of the Housing
Act, 1936. Appropriate action has, however, been taken to deal
with defective dwelling-houses in accordance with the nuisance
sections of the Public Health Act, 1936 and in this connection
454 houses were repaired and rendered reasonably fit for habitation
according to prevailing standards.
During the year, two houses, Nos. 48/50, Pincott Road, were
represented as incapable of being rendered fit for habitation at
"reasonable expense" and the Council resolved to make
Demolition Orders in respect of these old cottages. One family
was rehoused by the Council and the other found alternative
accommodation.
The total number of houses inspected for "sanitary defects"
under the Public Health and Housing Acts was 658. Action
taken in connection with defective dwelling-houses is set out in
the housing table on page 56.
