SECTION F—INFECTIOUS ILLNESS
Notification. The following diseases are notifiable in the
Urban District:—
Smallpox. There were no cases of Smallpox during the
year in this district. There has, however, been a considerable
amount of follow-up work done by the department during the
year, keeping persons under observation arriving in this
Country by air from abroad, from what are known as smallpox
contact areas, that is, areas where smallpox is occurring and
though they are not known to be actual contacts of a case, they
have had opportunities for such contact.
Enteric Fever. There have been no cases of Enteric Fever
in the district during the year, nor have there been any such
cases for the past four years. From time to time sporadic cases
occur without the source being traceable. The last cases we
had of this nature were in 1941, and before that we had no
cases since 1937, when one case occurred.
Dysentery. There has been a welcome drop in the number
of cases of Dysentery. This year we have had 6 cases only
notified. It should not be forgotten, however, that dysenteric
infections are so mild that they do not require the attention
of the doctor and among those that are seen by the doctor,
many do not justify the label dysentery, so that the dysentery
notifications cannot be regarded as an entirely reliable index
of the incidence of infection by the dysenteric group of
organisms. It is only when severer manifestations occur in an
individual or where a group of individuals suffer
