VITAL STATISTICS.
Vital Statistics for the year maintain the satisfactory
standard of previous years, the figures comparing very favourably
with those of the country as a whole.
The birth rate was 15.5 per 1,000 population, with a total
number of live births of 1,027.
The death rate was 9 per 1,000 population comparing
with the corresponding figure for England and Wales of 11.4.
The infant mortality rate was 33.1 per 1,000 live births as
compared with a figure of 46 for England and Wales.
As mentioned in previous reports, the effect of what is
probably a low population estimate is to raise these figures
slightly, and while this gives an exaggerated picture of the
birth rate, we can console ourselves with the reflection that the
death rate is correspondingly raised.
The total deaths from all causes was 602 and the total live
births 1,027, giving, therefore, a natural increase of population
of 425.
