POPULATION.
The Registrar General's estimate of the population for
1944 is 62,760. This figure is low compared with an estimate
based on occupied dwellings such as is used for local computation
of the ward population.
The Registrar General has again provided an estimate of
the population under five and between five and fifteen. This
has been done primarily to secure uniformity in calculation of
immunisation figurers, as there is a tendency to wide variation
from district to district in locally compiled estimates.
The figures for the age group 0—4 inclusive is 4,947 and
for the age group 5—14 inclusive is 9,939.
BIRTHS.
The registered live births totalled 1,151, an increase of 5
over the previous year; and the birth rate has shown a corresponding
rise from 17.4 to 18.3 per 1,000 of the population.
Of the total live births 585 were males and 566 females.
There were 49 illegitimate births; of these 22 were males and
27 females. There were 26 stillbirths; 15 males and 11 females.
INSTITUTIONAL AND DOMICILIARY BIRTHS.

confinements continues. Sixty-seven per cent. of the
