In the body of the Report, the public health legislation
enacted during the year is included under the various appropriate
sections. Special attention might, however, be drawn
here to the Food and Drugs Act, 1938, and the Measles and
Whooping Cough Regulations, 1939, under which cases of food
poisoning, Measles and Whooping Cough respectively became
notifiable.
In conclusion, I should perhaps apologise for devoting so
much space in this preface to detail and for some chronological
inconsistency. My excuse, however, is that while it is my primary
duty to report to you on the health of the district and the
activities of my department during the year under review, I
ought not to waste this opportunity of advising the district on
important current health matters.
I would like to record my appreciation of the encouragement
and support afforded to me by the Members of the Council
since taking over the appointment as your Medical Officer of
Health. To all the members of my staff, on whom I have had
to depend for their intimate knowledge of local details and
conditions, in no small degree, I wish to record my appreciation
and thanks, for their untiring and loyal assistance and to add
that it is to their credit that the public health outlook has been
maintained in the atmosphere of the past year, and it is to them
that what success the department has achieved is due.
I am, Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
A. WALLACE JOHNS,
Medical Officer of Health.
December, 1940.
