Progress in removing slum dwellings was carried a stage further when
the Minister confirmed Orders in respect of three small areas comprising
a total of 27 dwellings. The programme of this work is far behind schedule
and is held up only by the slow rate of providing alternative accommodation.
By contrast, the progressive work of creating annual smokeless zones
under the Clean Air Act, until the whole area is covered, is well on time
table. It is hoped that progress will remain unhindered and that it may
be brought to a satisfactory conclusion as originally planned by 1970.
I would again express my sincere thanks to all members of the staff
for their untiring and loyal assistance for yet another year.
I am, Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
F. LAWRENCE SMITH,
Medical Officer of Health.
July, 1962.
