Whooping Cough
The cases of whooping cough notified during the year numbered 81.
Although higher than in the three previous years it is still a low figure
compared with the years before whooping cough vaccination was practiced
to a significant extent and when it was common for the annual total
to run into several hundreds.
Whooping Cough Vaccination
This form of protective treatment is usually given in combination
with diphtheria immunisation and with possibly the extra addition of
anti tetanus treatment. The number under 5 years of age who completed
the full course of three injections against whooping cough, whether given
separately or in combination during the year, was 601 and the number
of children under 5 years known to have been vaccinated against whooping
cough at the 31st December was 68.4% of this age group.

Meningococcal Infection
Two cases of "spotted fever" were notified, one a girl of 5 years,
the other a baby of 16 months. Both were confirmed bacteriologically as
meningococcal meningitis and recovered after hospital treatment. The
first occurred in March and the second in December, and as far as
could be ascertained they were isolated cases having no connection with
one another.
