Disposal of the Dead
The Carshalton and Merton and Morden Joint Burial Board formed
by the two authorities administers 60 acres of land in Lower Morden
as a cemetery for both areas. During the year 386 interments took place
there of which 161 were from Carshalton.
The North-East Surrey Crematorium Board, representing the Councils
of Battersea, Sutton and Cheam, Carshalton and Merton and Morden
operates a crematorium sited in the Battersea cemetery grounds at Lower
Morden which adjoins the burial ground of the Carshalton and Merton
and Morden Board mentioned above. Cremations there numbered 771
in 1960 of which 50 were from Carshalton.
The District Council maintains a mortuary in Mill Lane which is
equipped with refrigeration storage and full post mortem facilities. By
agreement it is used for the reception of bodies from the neighbouring
districts of Beddington and Wallington and Coulsdon and Purley as well
as from the local Urban District. The number admitted during the year
was 192 as follows: —
