Vermin Control
Persons.
The incidence of personal vermin infestation has fallen to a very
low level. The Council maintains a Cleansing Station in Rochester Road
for dealing with the more severe manifestations of this condition, but
it is used now but rarely. Two families involving 8 individuals made
20 attendances for personal hygiene there during the year and of these
7 were school children. A factor which helps to obviate the necessity
for using the Cleansing Station facilities is the effectiveness of the modern
parasiticidal preparations which can be used at home.
Premises.

During the year, one lot of bedding was stoved, one lot destroyed and one hundred and ninety-two premises were treated for the destruction of vermin and insect pests as follows:—

Clean Air Act, 1956
In February the Council agreed a programme of Smoke Control
Areas designed to cover the whole district in a period of ten years. The
public health inspectorate is responsible for the day-to-day administration
of this scheme and have the assistance, for purposes of survey and
checking the necessary works, of a newly appointed technical officer.
On the 6th December the Minister's approval to the first Smoke
Control Order referred to in the last Annual Report was received and
by the end of the year 7 applications for approval of works had been
received.
In May the work of preparing the second Smokeless Zone was commenced.
This area which adjoins the No. 1 Smoke Control Area comprises
235 acres and 2,085 premises, is bounded by Buckhurst Avenue
on the south, the centre of Green Wrythe Lane on the west, the district
boundary on the north and the River Wandle on the east.
