Rivers and Streams
The work of maintenance involving clearance of the River Wandle
and its tributaries is the responsibility of the County Council and was
carried out by that Authority.
Closet Accommodation
With the laying of the new sewer in the Woodcote Grove Area, two
of the houses in the vicinity were connected to it. This leaves 15 houses
still drained to cesspools. The remainder in the district are connected
to the sewers.
Public Cleansing
The arrangements for collection and disposal of refuse remained
unchanged. The latter provided in the main for incineration in the
Council's 6-cell destructor, supplemented as necessary by the controlled
tipping of clinker and screenings on cemetery land at Green Lane,
Morden, until July and thereafter at Carshalton Road, Woodmansterne.
The destructor was closed down for the second fortnight in July for a
major overhaul which included the following:—
(i) provision and fitting of dust extraction plant;
(ii) provision and fitting of overband magnetic separator;
(iii) provision and fitting of new electric motors, together with
renewal of all wiring;
(iv) provision of 3-phase electrical supply;
(v) motorising feed chute to cells.
The Council continue to salvage saleable commodities such as
paper, tins, metals, bottles and rags.
Sanitary Inspection
The following information supplied by the Chief Public Health
Inspector under Article 25 of the Public Health Officers' Regulations,
1959, indicates the action taken in sanitary inspection during the year.
Investigations were made with regard to 1,126 complaints as
follows: —
