INFANT MORTALITY
Deaths of infants during the first year of life fell in 1960 to 14 from
19 in the year before. The infant mortality rate consequently was down
to 20.2 per thousand live births compared with 24.5 in the previous year.
The national rate for infant deaths during the year was 21.7. Those
dying from the so-called "unavoidable" causes peculiar to infancy
totalled 11 out of the 14 when death occurred during the first week of
life. The remaining three died of infection of one sort or another.
