DEATHS
The deaths allocated to the district, as adjusted by inward and outward
transferable deaths, was 544—286 males and 258 females. This
gives a crude death rate of 9.0 per thousand population as against 9.4
in the year before. The "comparable" death rate produced by the
application of the Registrar-General's comparability factor of 1.28 to
allow for differences in the age and sex constitution of the local population
as compared with the country as a whole was 11.1. The rate for
England and Wales was 11.5.
The distribution of the deaths by wards was as follows: —

Six fewer deaths from cancer in 1960 caused a slight fall in the rate
to 1.96 per thousand population. Malignant disease of the lung killed
28 individuals during the year, of whom 26 were males. This is 10 less
than in the year before, but represents nearly a quarter of all cancer
deaths.
The following table shows the deaths from lung cancer since 1936.
This covers the period in the development of the district during which
there has been but little variation in the total population.
