UNEMPLOYMENT
The following figures in respect of persons living in Carshalton
registered as unemployed at the Sutton Employment Exchange and the
Carshalton Youth Employment Bureau at the end of 1960 are supplied
through the courtesy of the Exchange Manager and the Youth Employment
Officer:
Men 102
Women 26
Boys 4
Girls 2
The figures are very comparable to those of 12 months before.
POPULATION
The Registrar-General's estimate of the home population at midyear
1960 is 60,430. This is 160 more than his estimate at the corresponding
date 12 months earlier. The de facto population at the census of
1951 was 62,721.
There is no doubt that particularly during the last few years of the
last decade there has been a progressive fall in the population of the
District. This is confirmed by the preliminary results of the 1961 census
which were available when these notes were compiled. From knowledge
of local conditions there is every probability that the decrease will ultimately
be found to have been mainly on the St. Helier estate. In the
1930's when this estate was first developed it rehoused a very young
population. In the course of 30 years it has matured, the children have
married and sought homes of their own with the result that the average
age of the estate residents is now appreciably higher than it was in its
early years and the level of occupancy is significantly lower.
