Abatement of the 12 dwellings was effected in the following manner:—
Provision of alternative accommodation by:—
Carshalton U.D.C. 5
London County Council 3
Other Local Authorities 1
Removal of one or more occupants 9
Of the 27 dwellings remaining overcrowded at the year end, 4 were
owned by the Carshalton Council, 15 by the London County Council and 8
were privately owned.
Slum Clearance and Demolition
The Compulsory Purchase Order in respect of Clearance Area No. 14
involving 30 terrace type houses and one combined house and shop in St.
John's Road was confirmed by the Minister with slight modification in
June 1959. Eleven of these families have been rehoused and 21 still await
new accommodation.
In December, a certificate was submitted to the Council to the effect
that 5 flats owned by the Council at 81 Stanley Road were unfit for human
habitation and not capable, at reasonable expense, of being rendered so fit.
In view of this certificate and upon the Council resolving to authorise
demolition, the Minister did not propose to arrange for an inspection prior
to demolition and he indicated that he would be prepared to consider an
application for payment of slum clearance subsidy in respect of houses
provided to rehouse the tenants of these premises. The five families comprising
13 adults and 7 children under 10 years of age have been rehoused
and the buildings have been demolished preparatory to re-development of
the site.
