Carshalton T.B. Care Committee
This voluntary Committee supported, except for a small grant of £50
from the County Council, by voluntary contributions, continued its
beneficient work on behalf of tuberculous patients and their families who
number approximately 800 in the Urban District. Its activities are directed
to alleviating the large amount of economic distress which is inseparable
from long term disablement occasioned by such a chronic disease as tuberculosis
in ways not covered by the statutory services and by enlisting the
available help provided by the public welfare and other voluntary services.
The Annual Report of the Committee indicates the comprehensive
nature of the assistance afforded which includes the following:-—
Grants and Gifts for—clothing—bedding—fuel—furniture—household
equipment—wireless equipment—heating appliances—
insurance premiums—fares to visit relatives in hospital—materials
for occupational therapy—pocket money for hospital patients, etc.
Loans to establish or re-establish businesses and to purchase vehicles
for transport.
Holidays, which are a prominent feature of the Committee's work.
Many families except for their help would be unable to secure any
real holiday away from their usual surroundings. Apart from the
family groups sent away by the Committee, special arrangements
are made to ensure as far as possible that the children of tuberculous
families get the benefit of a planned holiday. To this end the
Committee bear the cost of residence usually for fourteen days in
organised holiday homes.
The total payments made by the Committee in 1958/59 was £708 of
which £208 was either loan or repayment of loan received from other
bodies. The administration costs were £21 and the expenses of the seal
sale which produced £250 was £28. The remaining £451 was irrecoverable
expenditure on behalf of the patients.
