The new cases in the last ten years and the known overcrowded dwellings at the respective year ends were as follows :—

In all the 10 new instances of overcrowding, families were found to be
sharing accommodation with relatives.
Abatement was effected in the following ways :—

Of the 46 dwellings remaining overcrowded at the end of the year, 34
are owned by the London County Council, 3 by the Carshalton Council
and 9 are privately owned.
Slum Clearance and Demolition
The erection of the first block of flats and maisonnettes for rehousing,
inter alia, the occupants of Clearance Area No. 7 Stanley Road commenced
and was well advanced by the end of the year.
The Ministry inquiry into the order in respect of Clearance Area No. 8
Mill Lane was held on the 30th July, 1957. The order was confirmed without
modification and all the occupants of the area were rehoused and the
site cleared by the end of the year.
Housing Repairs and Rents Act, 1954
Those sections of this Act dealing with certificates of disrepair in
connection with proposed rent increases were repealed in July by the
Rent Act 1957. During the year one certificate of disrepair was issued
under the 1954 Act and is still outstanding.
Rent Act, 1957
Provision is made in this Act similar to that repealed in the Housing
Repairs and Rents Act, 1954 for the issue of certificates of disrepair in
connection with rent increases unless the landlord gives an undertaking to
