TABLE 1.
ESTIMATED HOME POPULATION, MID-1957, BY WARDS.
Ward | Dwellings at Mid-1957 | Estimated Population Mid-1957 |
---|---|---|
The number of dwellings is 385 more than shewn a year before. The
total of 17,429 dwellings for mid-1957 includes 254 which are attached to,
and rated with, business premises. This category of dwelling was not
included in the total shewn in the 1956 report.
BIRTHS
The number of live births registered during 1957 was 694 which is 19
less than in the year before. Of these 350 were males and 344 females,
giving a birth rate of 11.5 per thousand population.
The "comparable" birth rate produced by the application of the
Registrar-General's comparability factor of 0.97 to allow for the disparity
in the age and sex constitution of the local population and that of the
country as a whole is 11.1 per thousand population, which compares with
16.1 for England and Wales.
Information is not available as to the home address of births registered
to Carshalton residents occurring outside the district. For computation of
ward birth rates, therefore, use is made of the notifications of births received
under the Public Health Act, supplemented by the Registrar's weekly
returns of registrations within the district. From these sources it is known
that 704 live births and 17 stillbirths occurred in 1957. They were distributed
as shewn in the following table.
