Apart from the normal programme of sewer dragging and maintenance,
work at a cost of approximately £3,000 commenced on the construction
of the relief sewer in Woodmansterne Road between its junctions
with Beeches Walk and Fullerton Road. This is designed to obviate the
flooding which has occurred from time to time in the past in that area when
the sewers from Queen Mary's Hospital and that down Woodmansterne
Road which converge near Beeches Walk become surcharged after heavy
rain. Some constructional work was also undertaken in Sunnymede
Avenue in order to reduce the surface water flooding in this road near the
junction with Vincent Avenue.
Three thousand and ninety-six drainage obstructions affecting 1,430
houses were dealt with during the year, chiefly concerning combined
systems.
Rivers and Streams
The routine work of maintenance of the River Wandle and its expansion
was carried out as usual by the County Council. No complaints
were received in respect of the River during the year.
Closet Accommodation
All but seventeen properties have water closets connected to the
sewers. A scheme was formulated for an extension of the soil sewer in the
Woodcote Grove area which would do away with many of the existing
cesspools which are sited in the southern end of the district, but this scheme
is held up by the Ministry in withholding loan sanction for the work. There
are no earth closets.
Public Cleansing
No alterations have been made in the arrangements for refuse collection.
Disposal too is, as before, by incineration in the Council's six cell
destructor with tipping arrangements for clinker and screenings. Jointly
with the Merton and Morden Council an agreement was reached with
Carshalton and Merton and Morden Joint Cemetery Board to utilise land
in the ownership of the Board for lipping purposes. This should meet the
tipping needs of both districts for the next three years. Tipping of clinker
and screenings was carried out during the year on land in Mill Lane and
between Revesby Road and Shaftesbury Road where the existing ground
level is being raised to form public open space.
Sanitary Inspection
The following information supplied by the Chief Public Health
Inspector under Article 27 of the Sanitary Officers' Regulations, 1935,
