Vaccination and Immunisation
Schemes of vaccination and immunisation are the responsibility of
the County Council under Section 26 of the National Health Service Act.
These arrangements were extended during 1956 by the inclusion of antipoliomyelitis
vaccination. Schemes have now been formulated for vaccination
and immunisation by the County Council against the following
diseases—smallpox, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, tuberculosis and
poliomyelitis. By arrangement with the district councils local Medical
Officers of Health direct the schemes in respect of the four first mentioned
diseases.
Mantoux testing and B.C.G. vaccination against tuberculosis is at
present limited to thirteen-year-old children and is carried out under school
health service arrangements. The polio. vaccination scheme is so far
directed by the Divisional County Medical Officers. Details of the work
carried out under these schemes are given in Section F dealing with infectious
disease.
