The number of dwellings as at mid-1956 is 184 less than shewn in the
report of a year ago. This does not mean that the number of dwellings has
decreased, it has in fact risen by 42. The figures shewn are the number of
dwellings rated separately and the reduction is entirely due to the revaluation
which took place in 1956 when a number of properties which
previously had been divided into separate assesssments were deemed to be
rateable as a whole.
BIRTHS
The number of live births registered during 1956 was 713 which is 52 less
than in the year before. Of these 365 were males and 348 females, giving
a birth rate of 11.6 per thousand population.
The "comparable" birth rate produced by the application of the
Registrar-General's comparability factor of 0.96 to allow for the disparity
in the age and sex constitution of the local population and that of the
country as a whole is 11.1 per thousand population, which compares with
15.7 for England and Wales.
Information is not available as to the home address of births registered
to Carshalton residents occurring outside the district. For computation of
ward birth rates, therefore, use is made of the notifications of births received
under the Public Health Act, supplemented by the Registrar's weekly returns
of registrations within the district. From these sources it is known that 708
live births and 17 stillbirths occurred in 1956.
They were distributed as
shewn in the following table.
