The Registrar-General's statistics relating to population, births and
deaths differ slightly from those compiled from local records. The total
figures in respect of the district as a whole, which are supplied by the
Registrar-General, are set out in this report, but where classification has
been made, e.g. by age groups, sex, wards, etc., it has necessarily been
based on our own records, which may, in the aggregate, show slight
discrepancies compared with the Registrar-General's totals.
UNEMPLOYMENT
The following figures in respect of persons living in Carshalton
registered as unemployed at the Sutton Employment Exchange and the
Carshalton Youth Employment Bureau at the end of 1955 are supplied
through the courtesy of the Exchange Manager and the Youth Employment
Officer:
Men 83
Women 21
Boys 3
Girls 2
POPULATION
The Registrar-General's estimate of the home population at mid-1955
is 61,330, compared with 61,610 for mid-1954 and 62,721 enumerated at
the Census 1951.
Since mid-1951 the census year, the Registrar-General's estimate of
population has been reduced by 400 in the four-year period. During this
time the natural increase resulting from the excess of births over deaths,
was no less than 1,100. The Registrar-General's estimate of 61,330 postulates
that outward migration exceeded inward migration between 1951 and
1954 by 1,500 individuals. This despite the fact that 432 new dwellings have
been erected in the district in the last four years.
The following gives the estimated ward populations based on the
Registrar-General's total of 61,330:
