These figures cannot be strictly accurate since only a complete
survey could reveal the true position at any particular date. Dwellings
may become overcrowded without coming to the notice of the department
and there is no obligation on anyone to notify the abatement of overcrowding.
Since, however, these sources of error remain fairly constant,
the number on the overcrowding register affords a guide—and they
cannot be more—to the trend of the level of housing occupation.
In 48 out of the 49 new cases of overcrowding families were sharing
accommodation with relatives.
Abatement of the 56 overcrowded premises was effected in the
following ways:
Provision of alternative accommodation by:
Carshalton U.D.C 10
London C.C. 4
Other Local Authorities 4
Left the District 1
Removal of one or more occupant 35
Increased accommodation 2
Of the 105 dwellings remaining overcrowded at the end of the year,
84 are owned by the London County Coucil, four by the Carshalton
Urban District Council and 17 are privately owned.
Slum Clearance and Demolition
The Order in respect of Clearance Area No. 7, involving eight
tenement dwellings in Stanley Road, was confirmed by the Minister in
September, 1953. Work of re-development on the site lias not yet commenced,
although plans have been completed.
