Sewage is pumped to the disposal works of the Croydon Corporation
in Beddington, except at various points on the fringes of the
district, where it is more conveniently drained to the sewage systems
of neighbouring authorities.
Surface drainage in the south is mainly by soakaways in the chalk;
elsewhere it is by surface sewers to the River Wandle.
Two hundred and seventy-eight drainage obstructions affecting
1,137 houses were dealt with, chiefly concerning combined drainage
systems.
Rivers and Streams
The County Council are responsible for the branch of the River
Wandle which flows through the district and the ponds which feed it.
During September, the natural spring waters in various parts of the
district ceased to flow.
Routine cleansing work was maintained on the Tweeddale Road
open ditch. The Council's scheme for piping in this watercourse has
now received Ministry approval. One complaint was received during
the year regarding the River Wandle, which was dealt with by the
County Council.
Closet Accommodation
All dwellings have w.c.'s connected to the sewers except 17 in
unsewered areas which are connected to 13 cesspools. There are no
earth closets.
Public Cleansing
The Council's Engineer and Surveyor is responsible for this service.
Collection
Refuse is collected by a fleet of modern vehicles suitably designed
to meet the requirements of differing types of property and differing
types of approach. All are fitted with hydraulic tipping gears.
The collection of kitchen waste for pig food has been discontinued,
thus removing a potential source of public health nuisance.
Disposal
After extraction of saleable salvage material, refuse is burnt in
a six-cell destructor. A limited amount of tipping is unavoidable and
great care is exercised both with regard to suitability of site and control
over the method of tipping.
