INFANT MORTALITY
The deaths of 18 children who died under the age of one year were
registered, of which nine were males and eight females. These provide
an infant mortality rate of 23.3 per thousand live births compared with
28.0 in the year before. The comparable rate for England and Wales
was 26.8.
All but one were deaths of legitimate children.
Two-thirds of the deaths occurred in the first month of life. Congenital
malformations, prematurity and diseases peculiar to infancy
accounted for 15 and infections for three.
The ward distribution of infant mortality and the causes of death
are shown in Tables 6 and 7.
