The Registrar-General's statistics relating to population and deaths
differ slightly from those compiled from local records. The total figures
in respect of the district as a whole, which are supplied by the RegistrarGeneral,
are set out in this report, but where classification has been made,
e.g., by age groups, sex, wards, etc., it has necessarily been based on our
own records, which may, in the aggregate, show slight discrepancies
compared with the Registrar-General's totals.
UNEMPLOYMENT.
The following figures in respect of persons living in Carshalton
registered as unemployed at the Sutton Employment Exchange and
the Carshalton Youth Employment Bureau on 7th January, 1952, are
supplied through the courtesy of the Exchange Manager :—
Men 219
Women 80
Boys 18
Girls 12
POPULATION.
The Registrar-General's estimate of the home population at the
30th June, 1951, is 61,730. This is 420 less than his estimate at midyear,
1950 and 580 less than 2 years ago. Natural increase resulting
from the excess of births over deaths in the last 2 years was 540, and
it is difficult to believe that outward migration has exceeded inward
migration by more than 1,000.
The population of the district enumerated at the Census on the
8th April, 1951, was 62,804, of which 29,455 were males and 33,349
females. These figures compare with 28,586 persons (12,988 males
and 15,598 females) at the Census of 1931 and show an intercensal
increase of 119.7%.
Accepting the Registrar General's figures, the following table gives
the estimated distribution based upon our knowledge of local conditions.
