INFANT MORTALITY.
The deaths of 22 children who died under the age of one year
were registered, of which 9 were males and 13 females. These provide
an infant mortality rate of 29.0 per thousand live births compared with
28.4 in the year before. The comparable rate for England and Wales
was 29.6.
All were deaths of legitimate children.
Fifteen of the 22 deaths occurred in the first month of life. Congenital
malformations, prematurity and diseases peculiar to infancy
accounted for 19 and infections for 3.
The ward distribution of infant mortality and the causes of death
are shown in Tables 6 and 7.

MATERNAL MORTALITY.
One death resulted from septic abortion, the cause of which was
not disclosed by the evidence at the inquest.
