Monthly samples of the finished water pumped into supply from
both the Sutton and Woodmansterne stations were taken by the
Counties Public Health Laboratory and all were reported upon satisfactorily.
A further 11 chemical and 20 bacteriological samples were
taken by the public health departments in the supply area and were
satisfactory. The following is the report on a representative sample:
Chemical analysis in parts per million.
Total solid matter in solution (dried at 180° C.) 177
Combined Chlorine 14.0
Nitric nitrogen 4.6
Nitrous nitrogen none
Ammonia, free and saline.. none
Ammonia, albuminoid 0.002
Oxygen absorbed from permanganate in 4 hours at 26°.7 C. 0.03
Hardness—by acidimetric titration—Temporary 88
Permanent 24
Total 112
Reaction for free chlorine negative
pH 7.6
The water was bright and clear and was normal in colour.
Bacteriological examination.
Action by free chlorine during transit of the sample was
prevented at the time of sampling.
Number of colonies per ml. developing upon agar in 2 days at 37° C. ... 0
Number of colonies per ml. developing upon agar in 3 days at 22° C. ... 0
Organisms of the coliform group ... ... ... absent in 100 ml.
Streptococci -do.
CI. welchii ... ... do.
This water is one of high organic purity and very moderate hardness and
salinity. It is practically neutral in reaction and free from contaminating
metals. There was no residual chlorine at the time of receipt.
The bacteriological condition is excellent and the water is pure and
wholesome and suitable for the public supply.
Drainage and Sewerage.
The whole of the sewerage system to the Surrey County Council
Smallholdings at Woodcote were taken over by the Council during
the year, the actual lengths of sewers taken over being as follows:—
1,170 ft. of 4 in. soil sewer.
3,434 ft. of 6 in. soil sewer.
1,314 ft. of 8 in. soil sewer.
887 ft. of 9 in. soil sewer.
460 ft. of 10 in. soil sewer.
1,545 ft. of 12 in. soil sewer.
In addition, 1,060 ft. of 6 in. soil sewer was constructed from
the head of the soil sewer on the Smallholding to Woodcote Grove
House, and subsequently taken over by the Council.
