INFANT MORTALITY.
The deaths of 23 children who died under the age of one year
were registered, of which 15 were males and 8 females. These provide
an infant mortality rate of 28.4 per thousand live births compared
with 29.0 in the year before. The comparable rate for England and
Wales was 29.8.
All but one were deaths of legitimate children.
Twelve of the 23 deaths occurred in the first month of life, all in
the first week. Congenital malformations, prematurity and diseases
peculiar to infancy accounted for 16, infections for 6, and accident

The ward distribution of infant mortality and the causes of death
