In 81 of the new instances of overcrowding there was more than
one family in occupation, in 75 of which families were sharing accommodation
with relatives.
Abatement of overcrowding was effected in the following manner:—
Provision of alternative accommodation by—
C.U.D.C 17
L.C.C 48
Other Local Authorities 7
Left the District 33
Removal of one or more occupants 55
Of the 221 dwellings remaining overcrowded at the end of the year,
152 are owned by the L.C.C., 25 by the Carshalton Urban District
Council, and 44 are privately owned.
Slum Clearance and Demolition.
There still remain some properties which have reached the end
of their useful life and which provide accommodation well below an
acceptable standard. With the acute shortage of housing accommodation
no action with regard to demolition or clearance was undertaken,
but it is to be hoped that the rebuilding programme will permit the
resumption of this necessary work of rehousing without much longer
delay.
Tents, Vans, Sheds and Similar Structures.
Action was in progress at the end of the year with regard to two
movable dwellings.
Rent and Mortgage Interest Restrictions (Amendment) Act, 1933.
No action was necessary during the year.
Factories and Workplaces.
There were 122 factories and workplaces on the Register, 83 of
them using mechanical power. Employees numbered 1,324, of whom
832 were males and 492 females.

1 formal).
