INFANT MORTALITY.
The deaths of 24 children who died under the age of one year were
registered, of which 15 were males and 9 females. These provide an
infant mortality rate of 29.0 per thousand live births compared with
14.5 in the year before. The comparable rate for England and Wales
was 32.
All infant deaths were of legitimate children.
Fifteen of the 24 deaths occurred in the first month of life, 14 of
them in the first week. Congenital malformations, prematurity and
diseases peculiar to infancy accounted for 14, infections for 6, and
accident for 2.
The ward distribution of infant mortality and the causes of death
are shown in Tables 6 and 7.
