DAY NURSERIES.
The Carshalton Day Nursery in Camden Road is administered by
a voluntary committee assisted by a substantial grant from the Council.
It provides day-time care for a maximum of 27 children, 6 under 2
years and 21 over 2. The attendances up to 4th July totalled 2,861,
which gives an average of 18.8 for the 152 days the nursery was open.
The Council's Day Nursery in Green Wrythe Lane was originally
established under the auspices of the Ministry of Health as a war-time
nursery and later transferred to the Council's Maternity and Child
Welfare Scheme. It provides 74 places, 34 under two years and 40
over two and is open daily, Monday to Friday from 7.30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
and on Saturdays 7.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All applications are carefully
considered to ensure that each has good grounds for acceptance. The
majority of mothers are engaged in industry, the fact being confirmed
by a statement from the employer. A few children deprived of adequate
home care from other causes, e.i'., illness of the mother, are admitted
for those reasons. There is a lengthy waiting list for admission.
Payment by the parents was at July 4th, as originally, 1/- per day.

DOMESTIC HELPS.
The same staff of helpers used as Home Helps under the Maternity
and Child Welfare Scheme, is employed to give domestic assistance
in cases of general illness or infirmity. The number of households
provided with this help, exclusive of maternity cases, during the first
half of the year was 38, the householders contribution to the cost being
fixed by the same income scales as used by the maternity scheme.
