Orthopasdic Treatment
For the treatment of minor orthopaedic defects the Council has
an arrangement with a local private masseuse whereby children are
referred from the Council's clinics and attend the private premises
of the masseuse. During the year 43 children received 854 treatments
for the following defects : —
Genu-valgum 4
Genu-varum 34
Kyphosis 1
Muscular weakness 4
43
Under an arrangement with the management, orthopaedic cases
are referred to the Out-Patient Department of the Croydon General
Hospital and assistance is available towards the cost of in-patient
treatment and the provision of surgical appliances. One case was
provided with a surgical appliance during the year at part cost.
Convalescent Treatment.
As a result of war-time difficulties provision of convalescent
home treatment was on a much reduced scale. Children in need
of this treatment are referred to the Invalid Children's Aid Association,
with whom the Council has an arrangement. The Council also
subscribes to the Convalescent Homes for Surrey in respect of the
treatment of mothers and babies. One case received treatment for
two weeks under this arrangement for a bronchial condition in a
child contact of tuberculosis.
Maternity Hospital Treatment
Most of the mothers needing institutional accommodation for
confinement are admitted to the St. Helier County Hospital. An
agreement exists with the local War Memorial Hospital for the admission
of maternity cases, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to
secure the admission of cases referred from the Council's clinics. The
cases referred and admitted to hospital during the year were as
follows : —
For obstetric For unsuitable
and medical home
reasons. conditions. Total.
Carshalton (War Memorial)
Hospital — 3 3
St. Helier County Hospital ... 45 32 77
Other County Hospitals ... 4 10 14
49 45 94
Although only 94 cases were referred from the Council's clinics,
it should be observed that no fewer than 483 Carshalton babies were
born in hospital, and a further 55 in private nursing homes.
