The Registrar-General's statistics relating to population and
deaths differ slightly from those compiled from local records. The
total figures in respect of the district as a whole, which are supplied
by the Registrar-General, are set out in this report, but where classification
has been made, e.g., by age groups, sex, wards, etc., it has
necessarily been based on our own records, which may, in the
aggregate, show slight discrepancies compared with the RegistrarGeneral's
totals.
UNEMPLOYMENT.
The official figures of unemployment as supplied by the Sutton
Exchange are insignificant. They do not in any way refute the
fact that there was a dearth of labour in almost every direction. The
number registered as unemployed at December 31st was as follows: —
Men 51
Women 32
Boys 13
Girls 7
103

POPULATION.
The population of the district during 1945 was still some
thousands lower than at the outbreak of war. It fell considerably
as a result of evacuation during the latter half of 1944, but rose
steadily during 1945 with the return of the evacuees and the gradual
release of members of H.M. Forces. It is estimated that at mid-year
the number was 54,440, which is still some 5,000 less than in 1939.
The distribution of the population at mid-year was estimated as
follows:—
