Overcrowding.
As the inevitable result of growing housing shortage, the amount
of overcrowding steadily increased. Accurate statistics as to the
extent of this condition are not available, since only those dwellings
which are found to be overcrowded during visits for other purposes
are recorded. Hence the figures here quoted do not give a complete
picture of the position and there is ample evidence for the belief
that the trouble is very much greater than the number of recorded
cases indicates. In this connection it should be noted that the
applications for tenancies received by the Council now number
approximately 1,500.

During the year 23 new instances of overcrowding came to notice and 24 were relieved, leaving 72 dwellings housing 510 equivalent adults still to be decrowded at the year end. Details of these cases are as follows : —

Overcrowded at 31.12.44.Dwellings found overcrowded up to 31.12.44.Houses de-crowded during 1944.Remaining overcrowded at 31.12.44.Decrease during year 1944.
