As stated in previous reports, Carshalton is chiefly a dormitory area,
there being little industrial activity actually established within the
district. It is well supplied with open spaces, and a successful issue
to the endeavours made to include The Oaks Estate in the London
Green Belt will ensure an additional island of rusticity in the spreading
tide of urbanisation.
Industry and Employment.
The extent of recorded unemployment at the end of the year was
very comparable with the position 12 months earlier.

In early 1940 the number of unemployed living in Carshalton and registered at the Sutton Exchange was as follows:—

It should be observed that these figures are not complete, since
other residents may be registered as unemployed at other Exchanges.

Meteorology.
Meteorological apparatus exists in the grounds of The Grove, and
readings are taken each day at 9 a.m., G.M.T.
