The progress made in remedying overcrowding since the Housing
Survey of 1936 is indicated by the following figures:—
Number Overcrowded
Equivalent
Families Adults
At Survey, 1986 173 1,162
December 31st, 1936 178 1,163
December 31st, 1937 92 633
December 31st, 1938 79 562
December 31st, 1939 60 415
By the complete cessation of building as the result of the war,
the scope for further relief of overcrowding has been considerably
reduced. With the possible destruction of properties due to enemy
action, it is probable that the overcrowding position as a whole will
become aggravated. Moreover, the war-time movement of population,
which ebbs and flows with the varying intensity of air attack in
this and other districts, is likely to give rise to temporary but considerably
increased overcrowding in different parts of the district.
Houses Made Fit.
Two hundred and forty-three houses have been repaired and made
fit by formal procedure under the Housing Act of 1930. Of these, 7
were made fit during 1938.
One thousand three hundred and ninety-four houses have been
repaired and made fit informally since 1930. Of these, 213 were made
fit during 1938.
Tents, Vans, Sheds and Similar Structures.
Except to deal with an occasional caravan halting on the extreme
southern boundary of the district no action was necessary.
