Bed bug infestations were dealt with in 28 premises as follows:—

Council HousesOthersTotal
By hydrogen cyanide7815
By spraying5813
121628

The hydrogen cyanide process is carried out by arrangement with
private contractors. The gas is liberated from liquid cyanide in the
rooms up to the requisite concentration. Liquid spraying of insecticides
is undertaken by the Department's staff, using either Solution
" D " or Zaldecide.
The arrangements for vermin control exercised when occupation of
Council houses is taken up or transfers made were as previously
reported. Ten van-loads of furniture were treated by H.C.N, under
these arrangements during the year. Treated cases of infestation are
followed up and advice given where necessary with a view to preventing
re-infestation.
The Council houses are supervised by the Estates Manager.
Mosquito Control and Other Pests
Water places in the district owned by the Council were sprayed
during the months of February and April to destroy or prevent the
breeding of mosquito larvae.
In addition, 32 wasps' nests were destroyed and 4 houses were
sprayed for the destruction of fleas, silver fish, crickets and
ants, respectively.
Rats and Mice (Destruction) Act, 1919.
The National Rat Week Campaign usually organised by the Chief
Sanitary Inspector was not held during 1939, but action under the Act
was taken throughout the year where circumstances indicated it.
Smoke Abatement.
Three complaints of alleged nuisance from smoke were effectively
dealt with without the necessity for any statutory action.
Schools.
The Department works in co-operation with the County School
Medical Service in the control of infectious disease among school
children, and in all, sanitary matters affecting their health. Policy is
based on the recommendations cotained in the " Memorandum on
Closure and Exclusion from School, 1927," issued conjointly by the
Ministry of Heath and Board of Education.
Twelve visits were made to schools in the district, but no insanitary
conditions were found which required attention.
Disposal of the Dead.
The Council owns 25 acres of land in Morden which is the proposed
contribution to a joint Scheme with the neighbouring Authority of
Merton and Morden for burial accommodation.
