Measles.
Following a year of comparative freedom from measles, 1938 saw
the biennial rise in the prevalence of this infection. Cases among
school children reported by the Head Teachers numbered 540 as
against 89 in the year before. They occurred in the following
months:—

February 150
March 240
April 60
May 25
June 9
July 1
August –
September 1
October 1
November –
December –
The disease is not notifiable.
Eighteen cases were removed to isolation hospital. There were
2 deaths in male children aged 11 months and 12 years respectively.
Whooping Cough.
School returns show that among school children the incidence of
whooping cough was approximately half what it was in 1937.
Sixty-two cases were reported by Head Teachers as against 124
in the year before. There were no deaths.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
Three cases were notified, all of mild or moderate severity.
Hospital treatment was not necessary in any, although one child
continued to receive attention in the hospital in which it was born.

All completely recovered.
