As regards service water drainage, only small local extensions
were necessary during the year.
The drainage of 36 premises was connected to the sewer. Eightyseven
drainage obstructions, affecting 302 houses, received attention
whilst repairs were executed at 130 premises.
Rivers and Streams.
Towards the end of the year all the springs, except the Lower
Pool, which form the source of one head of the River Wandle, failed
and the flow was very small. No work of major importance was
executed on the river but the routine cleansing was carried out.
Five complaints of pollution were investigated but in 4 no case
for special action was indicated. In the remaining instance,
accidental pollution of a temporary nature was found to have
occurred.
Closet Accommodation.
Eleven cesspools were abolished and only 28 premises are now
not provided with water carriage connected to sewers. Eight of
these have pail closets and the remaining 20 are drained to cesspools.
Public Cleansing.
Domestic refuse is collected weekly by covered freighters.
Trade refuse is also collected on payment of a moderate charge.
As stated in the last report, disposal is by incineration at the
Council's 6-cell Destructor. No change was made in this organisation
during the year.
